Quick Tech Tip: Click, Click, Click - Solving ignition/starter issues with a relay

By By Lou Cegarra

Do you suffer from that constant "click-click-click" every time you go to start your 510? Have you replaced your starter only to have the problem return? This is a common problem with our Dimes that is only compounded by age. The problem stems from the starter solenoid not getting enough power from the ignition switch. In order to solve this, you’ll need to install a hard start relay.

The illustration to the right demonstrates the routing order of various wires that comprise the hard start relay. I used a 30 amp four-prong lighting relay.(These run about $5-10 from any good auto parts store) Here’s the way I have my setup wired.

Pin #s:

85 Connect to ground. (12ga wire)

86 Original wire from ignition switch that was on the solenoid.

87 New wire to solenoid (12ga wire)

30 Positive from battery. (or starter if the battery is in trunk) Use 10ga wire with a 30amp inline fuse. Get a good rubber-sealed blade-fuse holder, not one of those cheap plastic twist-a-parts.
